Swimwear is less forgiving than denim because there’s less structure. The best approach is to decide where you want visual focus (top, waist, or bottom) and then select the suit details that create that balance.
1) Choose your focus
- More focus up top: brighter color/print on the top, wider straps, structured cups.
- More focus at waist: belts, wrap panels, ruching, color-blocking.
- More focus on bottom: high-cut legs, brighter bottoms, side ties.
2) What usually works by body type
Pear / Triangle
- Tops: structured cups, wider straps, prints up top.
- Bottoms: higher rise and cleaner sides; avoid tiny side ties if they cut into the widest hip.
- One-piece: wrap/ruching at waist can be very flattering.
Apple / Top-heavy
- Comfortable midsection: ruching, wrap fronts, and adjustable straps.
- Prefer mid-to-high rise bottoms to avoid digging.
- Look for under-bust structure or supportive panels rather than tight compression.
Hourglass
- Match support to bust needs; avoid straps that dig.
- One-piece with waist definition or classic bikini with supportive top.
Rectangle / Athletic
- Add curves with cut-outs, color-blocking, or textured fabric.
- High-cut legs can create the illusion of longer legs and more curve.
3) Try-on checklist (the part that prevents returns)
- Raise arms: does the top shift?
- Sit: does the waist dig in?
- Walk: does the bottom ride up?
